Hey, Glenn Brandon Burke! Update On My LifeCapsTM Challenge (Motivational Speaker / Author / Columnist) Glenn Brandon Burke, M.A.Ed, is a... Motivational College Speaker * Author * Columnist * Master Educator * CEO I Survived My 72 Hour LifeCapsTM Challenge and Just for Good Measure, Continued on for an Additional 24 Hours, for A Total of 96 Hours of Living on LifeCaps! **Please Feel Free to Share With Friends** ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________Hey, Hey, Everybody! As you know, last Tuesday, November 4, 2008, I began the 72 hour LifeCaps challenge to see if I could survive in an emergency situation should the need arise. Well, I`m very happy and healthy to announce that the LifeCaps challenge was a success! As a matter of fact, upon the completion of my 72 hours (Friday), I decided to take it on for one more day -- making it a total of 96 of living on LifeCaps and water. Please allow me to share my experience...When I began the "72 hour LifeCaps Challenge" it was to test my friend and LifeCaps Founder, Daryl Stevenett. Not that I ever doubted him, but I`ve NEVER gone without eating for 72 hours, and quite honesty, think about all the unfortunate victims due to natural disasters -- people who couldn`t survive due to lack of food. Well, when Daryl told me he wanted to prove a point, himself, survived on LifeCaps for 17 days ( http://www.lifecaps.net/lifecaps-abc4.html), I thought I should try for at least three-days (72 hours). Day 1 (Nov 4 -- Election Day): 11:00 A.M. began with one LifeCaps and a cup of water. By 1:30 P.M. I was hungry and took one LifeCaps and a cup of water. At 3:45 P.M. I was once again hungry, so this time I took two LifeCaps. That was cool, and held me until 8:00 P.M. I took one more and went back to work on the computer. I did take an additional LifeCaps at 11:45 P.M. which held me well until I went to sleep at 3:30 A.M. A total of six LifeCaps taken in my 24 hour day. The only issue I came across was my late night food craving which was easily curbed at 11:45 P.M. with a LifeCaps. Also, knowing in my mind I had the luxury of being at home with plenty of LifeCaps may have psychologically altered my fear of "having" to survive. Regardless, I did do it! And I continued this regime for the remaining three days. I proved that a person in semi-decently health can survive 3 days, and a forth day as a bonus -- a total of 96 hours living on LifeCaps with what I believe to be in full physical and mental awareness. LifeCaps was created as a survival pill for emergency situations. However, I did lose six lbs in those four days. But as I write this article, which is now three days since I completed the challenge, I have added 1.5 lbs. I currently weigh 203.5 and my blood pressure is 120/74. You never know where you`ll be or in what situation. Wouldn`t it give you piece of mind knowing you and your family each have a bottle of LifeCaps, perhaps in your car or your child`s school pack-back -- just-in-case? I know I do. And so will my entire family when I send them each a bottle along with instructions to read through the web site and watch the videos on the site, too ( www.LifeCaps.net). Please keep in mind that in a situation away from home, LifeCaps will keep you alive for X amount of days. It did me for four days. If your situation shuts down the power, restaurants will not be able to sell food due to the fact that it may have gone bad. The food in your refrigerator may very well spoil. My point is, is that it`s better to be prepared for a situation that never happens than to not be prepared for one that does. Remember, I`m just a motivational speaker who thought the LifeCaps Challenge would be fun to try in support of my friend, LifeCaps Founder, Daryl Stevenett. On the front page of the LifeCaps web site is the nutritional information. Please check it out. Good luck. Be well. Make smart choices. And I hope you`re never in a situation where you NEED LifeCaps. Hey, Glenn Brandon Burke, What Do You Have To Say? (Motivational Speaker / Author / Columnist) Glenn Brandon Burke, M.A.Ed, is a... Motivational College Speaker * Author * Columnist * Master Educator * CEO ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________ Hey, Everybody! A close friend of mine, Daryl Stevenett, Founder of LifeCaps, along with Food Formulator, Russ Bianchi, created a phenomenal "Survival" product. Daryl was inspired to come up with "something" that's healthy, and could sustain life in an emergency situation. When I spoke with Daryl about LifeCaps, I asked the BIG question of WHY? Why a survival product? His inspiration was due to the Crandall Canyon Coal-Miners trapped, and sadly, never found, back in August 2007. He felt that perhaps if the miners had "something" they could take to sustain their life, perhaps it would've allowed them to live a bit longer, thus allowing them to fight a bit longer for their lives, and possibly have given search and rescue a few more days to find them. Given the recent natural disasters in America -- Katrina Hurricane in New Orleans, Galveston, Texas, Etc, Daryl informed me that people who do keep emergency food and water, keep it in their home. So what happens if you're in your car, camping, hiking, or biking, and an emergency situation comes about? Well, if you carry a bottle of LifeCaps, you WILL survive. To prove his point, Daryl did a 17-day LifeCaps Challenge ( http://www.lifecaps.net/lifecaps-abc4.html). He felt, while under a doctor's supervision, if he could sustain a healthy body and mind for 17-days, people certainly could live on LifeCaps for 72 hours. Though this product is specifically created for "Helping Sustain Life In An Emergency," Daryl did tell me that he did (Shhhhhhh!) lose some weight. So, since I could handle losing some weight, I thought I would take the 72 Hour LifeCaps Challenge. I went to the medical office today and I'm weighing-in at 208 lbs and my blood pressure is 118/72. I am beginning the challenge today (Tuesday, November 4, 2008, Election Day), and will end my challenge Friday morning, and will report back as to my results. In the meantime, I urge you to read through and watch the few-minute-long videos on www.LifeCaps.net. Also, I have listed below, the 22 FAQ's from the LifeCaps site. If you would like to comment about my challenge and or have any questions, please feel free to E-mail me directly at GBSmgmt@aol.com. Thank you, -gbb 22 FAQ's: 1. Q: How does LifeCaps™ work?A: LifeCaps™ is delivering, in a capsule form, bioavailable vitamins and nutrients that are essential on a daily basis for intake. LifeCaps™’s being absorbed through the Krebs Cycle of the metabolization of the body, and it’s being taken into the bloodstream within 20-25 minutes of ingestion. That is how LifeCaps™ is designed, and it’s designed to stay there for approximately 240-280 minutes in utilization (depending on the individual and their circumstances). The body will know better than someone on the outside what is required and needed for its specific needs, and it’s key that LifeCaps™ be taken with water from a hydration standpoint. We can live as human beings for a long time, but without water we are in very serious trouble. So in emergency circumstances, and in nutritional intake on a daily basis, without emergency circumstances, LifeCaps™ is assisting in terms of nutrient supplementation in viable dosages of recommended daily intakes of vitamins and minerals, to help the body not only utilize its own resources, but also help in terms of burning stored body fat, for folks that have at least 15% body fat. It’s very interesting to note that in America today there is an obesity crisis, and LifeCaps™ might address in some of these categories that factor because it’s assisting in what’s called “ketosis” in the Krebs Cycle, to burn stored body fat in glycogenesis, to create blood glucose in sustaining the body’s function, the brain’s functions, the heart’s functions. So we can live a long time with water and nutrient value, but we cannot live a long time on empty calories. Dosages for LifeCaps™ will depend on specific persons of a specific age, height, weight, and medical predisposition in a certain situation, over a specific period of time. But generally, three capsules per day is enough to deliver the recommended daily intake of all essential vitamins and minerals. As a result of this, the body has a nutrient ability to assist along with body fat, and along with water, to sustain life. Without nutrient value, body’s start to deplete either stored available nutrient value, or systems tend to degrade throughout the day to stress and nutrient depletion, if they’re not available. In terms of caloric value on three LifeCaps™ capsules per day, we are substantially less than the recommended 2000-calorie per day diet that Food and Drug Administration recommends. So this is not a replacement of food and caloric intake, this is a supplementation of the recommended daily intake of vitamin and nutrient value. LifeCaps™’s primary system for delivering all these values of recommended intake of prescribed FDA vitamins and minerals for optimal health is delivered by natural cane sugar. 2. Q: Why did we select natural cane sugar?A: Cane sugar has been one of the only natural vetted sweetener systems throughout history, used for many centuries. Sugar, specifically cane sugar, has the unique metabolic effect of transferring into blood glucose or energy through the human metababolization cycle within about 20 minutes of ingestion. It by itself will then create what’s called a “hypoglycemic event”, or a crashing of blood sugar, if it’s the only caloric intake. And that’s why it’s important, in combination with water, in LifeCaps™ to create the sustained metabolic effect. What we’re doing with the natural cane sugar is basically getting the nutrient values of the vitamins and minerals required into the bloodstream so the body can utilize them. If it were sugar in and of itself, like a placebo or sugar pill, basically you would get a quick energy effect and then an energy crash. That crash does not occur with LifeCaps™. 3. Q: Why does LifeCaps™ take away one’s hunger (or satiation)?A: The body is craving nutrient values to keep its Cardiovascular System, Neurosensor System, Renal System, Muscular System, Skeletal System, Circulatory Systems, etc, functional. Those require the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals, which are delivered in approximately three capsules per day (depending on specific individual and circumstances) in LifeCaps™. LifeCaps™ helps satiation. Satiation means that your body is satisfied in terms of nutrient intake. This is through a very complex number of hormones that are developed in the brain, including dopamine, and leptins, and a number of others that would take a long time to explain in this answer. The bottom line is why don’t you feel hungry when you take LifeCaps™? The answer is we are delivering blood glucose with nutrient values that can be utilized, and as a result, you feel energized, you feel satisfied, which is another word for satiation, and therefore you are not craving more calories. When you don’t crave more calories, you can burn body fat, and if you’re burning body fat, you are also helping to create blood glucose to help the systems of the body. LifeCaps™ is definitely generally recognized as safe, we only use bedded empirical real nutrient values in terms of our vitamins and minerals and natural cane sugar, therefore, from a safety standpoint, this is completely in the category of generally recognized as safe. 4. Q: Are there stimulants in LifeCaps™?A: No, we don’t believe in stimulants. There are a host of energy products out there, particularly in the beverage category, that claims stimulation or energy, and the vast majority of those are centered around caffination and neurosensor stimulants. The danger of these stimulants, whether naturally occurring, or drug induced, or synthetic, is they can cause very serious side effects in terms of cardioarrythmia, or pains in the chest, and particularly some of these in high dosages from some of the famous brand names out there in the energy drink business, in combination with alcohol, can actually cause cardiac arrest, and death, and have done so. Therefore, we do not believe in stimulants and we don’t want to be anywhere near them. We want to be all natural and safe. We want to provide good for you nutrient intake that assists health, assists satiation and assists life. 5. Q: How long can someone live on LifeCaps™ in combination with the proper intake of water, at the proper dosage levels for that particular person’s body weight and specific predispositions?A: Probably a fairly good amount of time. Certainly days, maybe weeks, until help gets to someone that may be in a situation like that. There are bedded studies with other caloric intake out there where people have gone over a month, NOT with LifeCaps™, but with other caloric intake and water; but without water in combination with LifeCaps™, it’s a fairly fairly short period of time. So drinking water is required, just like air is needed to sustain life to breath, in combination with LifeCaps™. 6. Q: Do LifeCaps™ contain any fiber?A: No, because soluble and insoluble fibers tend to create accelerated motility, or a reverse osmotic GI Tract effect, where you’re taking water out of the body, dehydrating the body, placing it into the intestinal tract, and depleting the body of nutrients. So fiber is a great thing for those that aren’t getting enough roughage, or have GI tract issues, however in terms of emergency situations, or emergency nutrient health, fiber really isn’t required, and that’s why we don’t deliver fiber with this. We’re trying to sustain blood glucose, sustain nutrient values, sustain body hydration, to sustain life with LifeCaps™. 7. Q: Are LifeCaps™ generally ‘OK’ for folks on medications?A: We are only talking about capsule dosages here, so even with the amount of cane sugar in LifeCaps™ potentially raising blood glucose, is that enough calorically to do something for folks that may have issues with sugar? And the answer is probably not, but one should always consult their physician in these matters, particularly those on prescription medicines. We are only delivering nutrient intake here of vitamins and minerals that are recommended on a daily intake basis by FDA. So it’s not as though we are creating some side effect, or cross-ill effect, with most prescription medicines, or over the counter branded intake, but it’s always good to consult a physician or medical advice before taking any product, nutrient, or otherwise. 8. Q: Are LifeCaps™ approved by the FDA?A: We are in complete compliance under dietary and nutritional supplement law, just like any other product would be that is generally recognize as safe, with vitamins and minerals and food grade constituents, that are all natural, therefore, we are compliant with the law. FDA doesn’t approve products unless they’re in a drug category. There are five separate areas I deal in: drug law, cosmetic law, food and beverage law, flavor law, and dietary and nutritional supplement law. LifeCaps™ are a dietary nutritional supplement and we are in complete compliance with that law. We designed LifeCaps™ so one does not have to necessarily take the capsule. You can break it open, drop it into the recommended amount of drinking water and drink this. It is a pleasant taste. It is not a mediciny aroma or taste that one would associate normally with a lot of non-efficacious multi-vitamins, because LifeCaps™ are all natural and everything we are using in them is good for you. 9. Q: Should a child be taking lower amounts of LifeCaps™ than adults?A: With children, body weight and exercise enter into this, so if it’s three for an average adult in terms of LifeCaps™ daily intake, the recommended amount for a child that is one-half to maybe one-third or one-fourth the body weight of an adult, one should act accordingly in terms of those dosages given. So should a child be taking less than adults? Probably so. 10. Q: How do LifeCaps™ differ from diet pills?A: Diet pills tend to be real drugs, or real stimulants, with real potential harmful side effects. I don’t think I have to mention too many for folks to know that there are things that were taken off the market, like Fen-Fen, that can be extremely dangerous, if not death-inducing. Again, LifeCaps™ are not a stimulant and are not a drug! LifeCaps™ are an all-natural supplementation of vitamins and minerals to assist body nutrient intake. Therefore, from a diet standpoint, or a satiety standpoint, LifeCaps™ are fundamentally different than harsh stimulants or bad side-effect diet drugs. 11. Q: Could LifeCaps™ be used as a diet pill?A: LifeCaps™ helps sustain satiation, which then means you are less hungry, which means you then can burn stored body fat with proper other nutritional intake with water intake or hydration intake and probably with regular low-impact exercise, and could that assist in terms of body weight loss? The answer is yes, but it’s always in combination with everything I’ve just mentioned. America thinks that they can go out and eat a quart of ice cream and then take one magic pill and not have any consequences. LifeCaps™ is not a diet pill in that regard, it’s not some of these new brand-names out there that start with “A” etc., that you can’t even find on the shelves because everybody’s so desperate for a magic pill (and all have serious warning labels and side effects). LifeCaps™ is not a magic pill, LifeCaps™ is real dietary supplementation to help curb dietary caloric intake, that then allows you to burn body weight, but again with regular physical exercise, and regular healthy caloric intake for a specific person of a specific predisposition. A great deal of multi-vitamins out there are compressed, or so densely coated with artificial shellacs and fake colorings or sealants, that they’re not even broken down in the enzymatic stomach acids to even get into the blood stream. In fact, the leading brand in the United States that everyone seems to take, is passed right through the gut, and you get NO nutrient value out of it whatsoever. Even if it were broken down and you crushed it, to try to get it into the bloodstream, many of the vitamins and minerals are synthetic, and therefore not recognized by the body, and then pass through just as powder. 12. Q: So what’s the difference between LifeCaps™ and a lot of leading multi-vitamin brands over-the-counter out there?A: LifeCaps™ work, the others don’t. 13. Q: Can one use LifeCaps™ as a multi-vitamin?A: Absolutely, because this is efficacious nutrient value of metabolizable vitamin minerals at the recommended daily intake, that actually are utilized into the body. So could it be used as a multi-vitamin in addition to the other attributes? The answer is yes. 14. Q: How can LifeCaps™ help obesity?A: Obesity, or morbid obesity, is a MAJOR problem in America. For those out there interested in looking for a straight forward and easy to understand book, I would recommend a very fast read, in very simple language called: “Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People In The World” by Greg Critzer. And you can buy it in paperback for pennies on the dollar used, you don’t have to go out and buy a new hardbound book. But it explains the food politics out there, and how the food and beverage chain have been truly dumbed-down, and how there are bulking ingredients out there that actually harm health and have contributed to obesity. A major culprit in this area is High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is converted into stored body fat or triglycerides in the body, leading to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. 15. Q: For someone who has extra weight on them, or significant extra weight, are you going to need to take more than three capsules of LifeCaps™ per day?A: Yes, you probably are, just based on body weight and mass, or lack of exercise, for nutrient supplementation. It should allow for satiety, or satiation, so that you’re not eating additional calories to contribute to stored body fat. It’ll depend on the specific person, specific body weight, and specific activity and their other caloric intake, but hydration is key. Hydration without High Fructose Corn Syrup that is! Drinks like water and real whole-raw milk are good. In terms of intake, should you take all the LifeCaps™ at once, or should you take them over a period of a day? My suggestion is that you try to dose it out over the entire day, to sustain your blood-glucose level, so that you are not eating additional, or abnormally large, amounts of calories. 16. Q: What about using LifeCaps™ in association with cardiovascular disease, blood thinners, high cholesterol, diabetes, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance?A: All people, whether medically compromised, or not, need recommended daily intakes of real vitamins and minerals. Some, in some categories, actually need more to help correct their situation. 17. Q: Is LifeCaps™ efficacious in a lot of these categories, and will it in any way harm or adversely interact with any other medications?A:LifeCaps™ intake will again depend on the individual, but as a general statement, not a specific statement, LifeCaps™ is delivering nutrient value that is required of any individual, whether on prescription medicines, or not. 18. Q: Why LifeCaps™? Why was it developed and how hard was it to do?A: I personally had never really thought about developing such a ‘good for you product’ until it was brought to me by the founder of LifeCaps™ as a concept. I live in a very unique part of the food chain, the beginning of it, and realized that there was real potential opportunity to help people here, and that’s why I got interested in it and developed LifeCaps™. In terms of difficulty, yes, it was extremely difficult, and this took many years and decades of knowledge in nutrition and human metabatolization to properly vet in terms of metabolic affect, absorption, and utilization. Said another way, if this were easy, someone would have done it long ago, or already. 19. Q: Why didn’t somebody do this before or why can’t somebody also do this?A: It was a number of indices that came together at the right time, with the right formulator, with the correct individuals with LifeCaps™ company, and do I foresee others trying to knock this off or imitate it; they can try, but they won’t be first to market, they will not be as efficacious in metabolic effect, and as a result, LifeCaps™ is going to do what previously has not been offered in the marketplace, and build brand and build brand loyalty because it works. 20. Q: Who can use LifeCaps™?A: There is a very broad and wide spectrum. Basically, if I were to be a little callous in my answer, I would say 310-315 million people in the US are candidates. However, with the active lifestyles that are out there, and even sedentary lifestyles of folks that are in senior homes, nutritional depletion from food and beverage is a major problem, and as a result of that, real supplementation is required. So whether you’re out skiing, whether you’re out running a triathlon or marathon, whether it’s just a daily round of golf, whether you’re taking the kids to the soccer game, picking up groceries, and missed a meal, or you’re looking to knock off a few pounds and pass the double-cappuccino or ice-cream parfait or fruit smoothies with empty calories, LifeCaps™ can deliver this nutrient need and requirement for your body and assist you in that regard. 21. Q: How did you get into LifeCaps™?A: I would just like to say the reason I got into LifeCaps™, I saw an opportunity to help folks. This is not really about money, it’s about building a brand that truly helps people. If you don’t have a moral foundation, an efficacious foundation, in terms of what the product really is and does, you don’t have a brand that is sustainable. LifeCaps™ is actually going to help people globally, because it does indeed do what it says, and as a result of that, LifeCaps™ is going to benefit people in unsafe situations, dangerous situations, emergency situations, as well as everyday normal mundane situations. So I look forward to LifeCaps™ really helping folks, because that’s what the intent was from the beginning. 22. Q: Is it possible to overdose on LifeCaps™?A: I think you could overdose on drinking too much water; it’s called drowning. I think you could overdose on air; it’s called hyperventilation. We are a society of extremes and tend to think in extreme, as opposed to common sense and moderation, or at least that’s what’s portrayed in the media these days. What I would recommend common sense and moderation are always preferred, and yes, if you consume too much of anything at too high an amount, in too short a period of time, could it potentially harm you? The answer is potentially yes. So should someone be downing 60 pills of LifeCaps™ on a daily basis, the answer is absolutely no, it’s ridiculous, it’s stupid, and it’s unwise. Intake amounts of LifeCaps™ do depend on an individual, their specific needs, their specific weight and exercise regiment, their other specific intake medically or calorically, and common sense should be the approach with LifeCaps™. The LifeCaps™ recommend daily intake is three per day. Are six LifeCaps™ a day going to harm anyone? The answer is no, potentially on those indices I’ve indicated, common sense should be the rule of thumb here. Pre-menopausal or menopausal women, and lack of hormonal activity or estrogen that occurs during this period of time; will LifeCaps™ in any way adversely react with medication or potentially harm? And the answer is no. LifeCaps™ are dietary nutritional supplementation, and it would be true with most absorbable vitamins and minerals that assist body functions; therefore LifeCaps™ should assist in terms of potential things like hot-flashes, but that would be true of any caloric intake with efficacious and soluble vitamins and minerals. With LifeCaps™ you’re doing it with significantly less caloric intake. Specifically, LifeCaps™ is a neutral pH so it isn’t too acidic, or too alkaline, and therefore in terms of stomach reaction or acid reflux, or ulceration of the stomach, should LifeCaps™ in any way create a side effect in that regard? I would say hypothetically or potentially no, is it going to be true in all situations, no, but certainly for the vast majority of them, it should not create such an adverse effect.

Do Motivational Speakers Truly Benefit Colleges? Well, to answer that question, we need to know for what purpose a Motivational Speaker`s been hired? I know several speakers who give the Rah-Rah speeches that get’s the students "fired-up" but leaves them with an emptiness afterward. Is this of true benefit? I suppose it`s subjective. Then there`s others who speak on Life After College and/or Greek Life. Where some are for pure entertainment, but with a positive message attached. Do these Motivational Speaker`s benefit the student and college? Sure, they serve a purpose. Just like when the Student Affairs Dept. brings in a comedian, band or hypnotist. They`re fun. They`re entertaining. They`ve served a purpose. However, if community colleges, universities, and or career colleges want a fun, yet serious speaker who specializes in something that will greatly benefit both the student and the school as a whole, you should consider a Motivational Speaker who specializes in increasing Student Retention, Student enrollment, Student Equity, and overall student success! Why? Whom? Please allow me to enlighten you. Motivational Speaker, Glenn Brandon Burke, M.A.Ed (www.GlennBrandonBurke.com) knows of what he speaks. Originally a high school dropout, who, at the age of 28, realized that education is the foundation for a successful life, decided to turn his life around, and in 2003 began as a Motivational Speaker for the purpose of helping students, colleges, and given his background as the CEO of a major sales company (www.TheBurkeAdvantage.com), also speaks on success in sales. When Glenn shares his personal story intertwined with positive, pro educational and life messages, students either directly identify with him, of they personally know someone who can -- a friend. A sibling. A parent. Etc. Glenn shares how if he can come from the disadvantaged life he did, yet succeed with his education, life and career, then ANYONE CAN! And EVERYONE should...hear him speak! If you are interested in your school`s student retention and revenue, then contact Glenn Brandon Burke, M.A.Ed, for a booking to see how he can benefit you and your school. Glenn`s book, The Power of Choice Changed My Life: (A Motivational and Inspirational True Story That Can Positively Influence Your Life or The Life of Someone You Love) will soon be released In the meantime, Glenn is a contributing author in Linda Forsythe`s Walking with the Wise for Overcoming Obstacles, along with such greats as Joe Vitale, Les Brown, Brian Tracy, and many others. Student Retention * Equity * Success (Without the success of all these, the student loses out on a better life and the school has lost revenue.) Students are dropping out of college at an alarming rate! Why? According to the U.S. Department of Education (2007) and the American Association of Community Colleges (2007), the attrition rate, or what’s more commonly known as the dropout rate, on average, for traditional colleges, universities, community college and career colleges, the dropout rate is nearly 45%. In other words, nearly 1/2 the students in America are dropping out of their higher education institutions within the first half of their studies. THAT’S SAD! During a four-year study I conducted between 2001 – 2005 between 28 classes I taught, as well as random interviews with 1,800 students and 200 teachers at six different colleges, I learned why students dropout, why students didn’t know about the equal opportunities available, and why we haven’t had more students succeed with their education. As we all know, or should know, completing one’s education is the foundation to building a successful future. And for this to happen, all parties must be actively involved – staff, faculty, administration, peer leaders, and other student volunteers. My four-year study began during my first semester teaching Public Speaking at a local community college when the Speech department put on a speech competition. I was told it was open to every student currently enrolled in Speech 101 who desired to try. I was further told that most, if not all teachers, told their students that if they participated and did their best, regardless of their outcome, they would receive extra credit. Well, knowing that allowing all students to participate would be a cluster you-know-what, I hand picked my two most promising students and encouraged then to enter the competition. Though they were both nervous, I assured them that I was their teacher and I would, during off-class hours, work with them. After all, isn’t that what a teacher should do – teach? Well, both my students made it to the final round, but only one made it to the “Final Four” and he won! During our next faculty meeting I heard another teacher complaining about the competition, and she said the ‘teacher whose student won, was brought in as a ringer.’ Though I usually leave well enough alone and pick my battles, this one couldn’t be left alone since my ethics and integrity were brought in to question. So I politely introduced myself as the teacher who she recently accused or bringing in a ringer. And man, you should’ve seen her turn five shades of red. Couldn’t quite tell if it was from being embarrassed or due to the fact she was caught with her foot shoved half way down her throat. I told her he wasn’t a ringer. Rather a fulltime student and I felt he had enough raw talent that if we just worked together, he could become completely polished – which he was. And here she comes again. “Are you saying that you taught him how to do his speech so well!?! I laughed and asked if that was a trick question, because I certainly didn’t get it. But low and behold, she was serious. So I told her I stood before her as a teacher who did his job very well, and taught his student how to deliver an outstanding speech. She then informed me that I wasn’t allowed to coach my students. So I said, I’m sorry, the rule book wasn’t given to me. But if you would be so kind as to get me a copy of the rule book, next semester I promise I will know it cover to cover and not do anything against the rules.” As she asked around for a rule book, we quickly found out that there wasn’t a rule book, and no mention from the department head about not teaching your students. Hmmm…? It appears some people do not like other’s to succeed and care about doing their job well. She must have been one of those teachers who simply doesn’t care about truly educating her students, and just goes through the motions to collect a paycheck and have her summers off. Speaking of teachers going through the motions, let’s now move into my study. This part of the study took place over a four-year period, including summer classes between a total of 28 classes I taught. First, allow me to say that all students received, at a minimum, the bare required basic requirements set-forth by the college. Student Retention Study in the Classroom: This first study was between two different teaching styles, and studied what it takes to improve student retention, class work and tests scores. Style one: “Motivational,” based on my personal teaching philosophy and style. Style two: “GttM” (Going through the Motions), based on everything opposite of my personal philosophy and style, hence, going through the motions. In my study, I took (subject 1) 14 classes and made learning fun, taught with passion, true caring (identifying troubled students and working with them one-on-one), motivation, inspiration, and with firm control of the class, thus gaining the students respect, yet having fun while learning. With the other (subject 2) 14, I simply taught by going through the motions. The results are as follows: Subject one: Never exceeded an 8% drop-rate. 100% improved class work. And 100% pass rate on tests (mid term and final exam). Subject two: 20% - 32% drop-rate. 80% improved class work. And 80% pass rate on tests (mid term and final exam). Based on the results of my study, I believe if a teacher has passion for what they teach, truly show they care, is motivational, inspirational, has respect of their students’, and makes learning fun, more students WILL rise to the occasion and succeed. Sadly, there are far too many teachers whom, for whatever reason (available for another article), simply go through the motions when teaching and cannot reach the students, and probably do not care. Student Equity Study throughout Six Campuses: This study was conducted over a four-year period, 2001 – 2005, with 1800 students and 200 teachers via personal interviews at three different community college campuses, one four-year university, and two career colleges. Before we delve into specifics, let’s first define the term “Equity.” According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, the word “Equity” is defined as follows: Main Entry: eq·ui·ty Pronunciation: ek-w t- .Function: noun. Inflected Form(s): plural –ties. 1: fairness or justice in dealings between persons 2: a system of law that is a more flexible addition to ordinary common and statute law and is designed to protect rights and achieve just settlements in cases where ordinary legal settlements may be too strict 3: the value of an owner's interest in a property in excess of claims against it (as the amount of a mortgage). Now that we understand that the word “Equity” means “Fairness,” let’s know the meaning of the term “Student Equity” in the world of education. I’ve read the definition in a variety of ways, such as, “students from historically underrepresented groups have an equal opportunity for access, success, and transfer.” Regardless of how it’s termed, it simply means that all students are allowed the same rights and access to succeed with their education. However, not all students, regardless of race, creed, national origin, socioeconomic background, etc, receive the information well enough to have the same rights as the others. From my experience, every student has been either given (written) and or told of the availability allowed them for complete success -- e.g. Tutorial Centers, Disability Department, ELS Dept., Computer Labs, Writing Labs, Library, etc. Most, if not all, students receive the written information at student orientation in a welcome packet, and may also receive the information needed to succeed via a lecture at the orientation. However, some students do not pay attention and or may toss out the packet of information. If this is the case, when and where else may the students learn of something they knew nothing about? When I taught college, I was required on the first day of class to inform students of all the available programs and departments to help ensure equity and success. However, I took it a step further and reminded my students every class. As a matter of fact, I took yet another step in aiding my students, and reminded them each and every class. However, some students still do not listen and or care enough to pay attention until either they need the assistances or it’s too late. As an example, my youngest daughter, a sophomore at a California State University, recently having difficulty in a core class, called me to vent her frustration over not knowing the assignment well enough to what was required. She said that she spoke with all her sorority sisters, and no one there had taken the class and wasn’t able to help. She said the office hours allowed by her professor didn’t allow enough time for him to sufficiently help her. So I asked her if she’d been to the tutorial center? She had no idea what I was talking about. So I said if she truly cared about learning the topic and assignment, she will go to the student center and ask how to find the tutorial center, and find a tutor for her assignment. She went. Found a tutor. And now understands what to do, and now hold the power to allow her success with her studies. Thankfully, her Father’s an activist for student success! LOL. Now, I know for a fact that she was once given all the information for having access to succeed during orientation. I know because I was there with her. She, like many young students, do not pay enough attention, or even keep a file on all the papers to refer back to when and if needed. Now that we’ve had an overview of Student Equity and its meaning, let’s take a look at my study: During my random interview of students (1,800) and teachers (200), I asked the same question of all my participants. - Have you heard of the term Student Equity? (For those who said yes, which was 1,758 students, I asked them a follow-up question. The 42 who couldn’t answer, I schooled them. All 200 teachers said they had heard of the term.)
- Define “Student Equity and give an example.” Though all 1,800 students gave some variation of the correct definition, very few could give an example. Whereas the 200 teachers basically answered the same as the students, the majority actually were able to cite examples. Kudos for the teachers!
- STUDENTS: Does your school offer access to a Tutorial Center, Disability Department, Computer Labs, Writing Labs, Library, etc?1,785 students responded with some variation of “I’m sure they do. Probably. I guess so. I would hope they would. And the likes thereof. The remaining 15 students knew exactly where to go and have either used these services or know of someone who has. So, I asked the 15 students that if they were asked to be an “Ambasador to the School” for the purpose of helping other students know more about equitable programs on campus so they have an equal chance to succeed, all 15 said they would. As a matter of fact, they would be honored.
- TEACHERS: How is the information disseminated among the students to know how to locate the offerings that will aid them in succeeding with their education? All teachers assumed the student received the information in some sort of Welcome to School packet and felt it was up to the student you read the information and what to do should they need one of the services. Not one of the 200 teachers were willing to go above and beyond and identify troubled students and offer advice past a suggestion for going to see a guidance counselor. I asked that if it were made mandatory to identify troubled students in their class, would they now go above and beyond. They all agreed that if it were in their job description and ‘HAD” to do it, they would. I further asked about working one-on-one away from office hours, so long as it didn’t conflict with other classes, would they be willing to do so? Again, if it were written into their new contract and “HAD” to do it, they would make the time.
Why Do Students Dropout? Through my years of teaching and as a motivational speaker, specializing in student success, I have found only a few key factors that contribute to a student dropping out. One being, the student feels lost and confused, mainly due to not understanding the work, and feeling that there’s no one who truly cares to offer the help – even the teachers. Yes, I know these students are adults, but they’re here for a reason. They’re here for an education, and because mommy and daddy are no longer holding their hand, they feel all alone. Well, as educators, it’s our job to identify these students and offer them the personal assistance, and or, help them find where they need to go for the additional help. After all, we’re here for them. If we didn’t have students, we wouldn’t have jobs. But in reality, we will always have students, but there’s no reason we cannot increase the student body, and give them all the tools necessary tools to be successful. Secondly, many students find that being on their own is a very daunting task, and quite often with bills they’re not prepared to paid, and therefore, drop a class, and then maybe two, and then possibly a third or more so they may work more hours and or find a second job just to pay the bills. Perhaps, the fact that we allow credit card companies on campus to solicit students with the grand idea of having their very own credit card without mommy and daddy looking over their shoulders, and being told that it’s time to grow up and start building their own credit is part of the problem? So what happens when the student cannot pay the bill? They end up either with poor credit or dropping out of school to work more just to pay down the credit card(s) that they initially found on our campus. Are we actually doing them a service or disservice? Thirdly, we have students who are either single parents, or married with an unsupportive spouse. This is a tough one since we cannot become involved in their domestic problems. However, the single parent-student and the married student are usually more mature and actually are more focused on their studies and are willing to weather any possible storm and complete their education. However, some will have problems that may hinder their education. What do we do without breeching any code of ethics? Easy, remind them that we’re here to help with their studies, and we can always refer them to our counselors. Lastly, we have the students who are here because until the age of 23, they receive a Social Security benefit due to a deceased parent. So they attend without any direction. They just want the money. However, these students are like finding a raw diamond – they can be polished. Though they say they’re here for the money, the can be easily convinced and will grasp the fact that between the age of 18 and 23, that they will have five-years verses the traditional four-years to complete a bachelor’s degree. They can spend thee-years at the community college working on their GE, and then transfer to the university for the final two, or vice versa. Bottom line, for these students to continue receiving their benefits, they need to do well in school, and it’s easy to guide them properly and give them the direction they truly desire. No That We’ve Learned About Retention, Equity, and Dropouts, Let’s Examine the Results of the Survey: This four-year survey taught me a few important things: 1. Teachers, overall, do not really care. Don’t get me wrong, many do. 2. Students care, but not enough to take the extra time to find what they need to truly succeed. 3. Schools are in serious need of help in the arena of student success. 4. Remember what I wrote on page #1 about the dropout rate being at an alarming high? Well it is! 5. This can all be fixed. Keep in mind that there will never be 100% conformity, but we can certainly increase the number of students retained and become far more successful. Without meeting with, or at least speaking with the right person at every college in America, I cannot say for sure, but I would go so far as to say that I would imagine that most, if not all colleges have a team and several departments to ensure Student Equity. But for argument sake, let’s say every college; community, university, and career, all have a Student Equity program in place that could seriously benefit the success of their students. But how do we get this information to each and every student? Well, it’s not nearly as difficult as it may seem. First of all, we need to make sure we have the departments and teams in place. Secondly, we need to ensure that all employees – staff, faculty, administrators, counselors, student leaders, and volunteer student ambassetors take this very seriously and are trained on how to properly approach students and continuously inform that these programs exist and how to find and utilize them. Without direction, how can you expect anyone to get to their final destination? In our case, the destination is a successful completion of the students’ education! Moreover, student retention, student equity, and the students overall success is serious business, but easy to manage and handle for those who have such a passion for this field. I have this passion, and that’s why I have been so successful in the world student success. As a motivational speaker specializing in student success, mainly with community and career colleges, I can take an auditorium full of students, and let’s say 300 have thoughts of possibly dropping out, for whatever reason. After my one hour interactive speech, I guarantee more than half of the 300 will now be motivated and inspired to stay in school and complete their education, thus building the foundation for a successful life. To succeed with a student retention & equity program, and or with my motivational speaking program, the schools, whether public, private or proprietary, will always benefit. And that’s because all colleges are a business. And by succeeding you will increase enrollment and retention, and therefore increase your revenue.
