Your experiences with publishing
Are you interested in sharing your knowledge with other writers on the topic of publishing, be it self-publishing or mainstream publication?  I know I have plenty of stories and I have plenty of questions as I just signed with a literary agent and still don't know if I am doing the right thing.  I have been published several times but I still have to work at other jobs to support my habit of writing.  If you have any insight into the writing profession please post here.

My first novel is coming out in July and I'll be happy to share my stories and any tips I have.

I was thinking I might start blogging about my experiences in publishing on my main page once I figure out how to upload the book cover.

My experience
I had my first book published because of a speech I made at a church.  A local publisher did the editing and printing.  I kept the rights.  What I didn't know is you have to be a better marketer than you are a writer even if you were a regular Shakespeare.  Ha.  It went okay.  I would have liked somethings to go better so I tried to sell the rights.  I submitted it to several agents and publishers and got some favorable reviews and a personal phone call and an agent but I am also still thinking about self-publication for it as it is a very specialized book for the families of prisoners and while there are 2.4 million people inside and an estimated 10 people per incarcerated person waiting on the outside the major publishers are a little shy.  One called herself "cowardly" because she said she knew it was needed but she needed to make big money on each title she published and felt the money just wasn't there for her.  It has been an education as you say.  I hope I learn enough to be a success.  I have traveled a lot, spoke to groups and things and that was very exciting and paid too.

Book Publishing

I just had a book of inspirational poetry published, entitled "Poise: Select Poems." I written since 9 years old, but it was always very private and intimate, until I shared it recently, they encouraging me to publish. I am passionate about the writing, but since I have published, I am consumed with promotion, school visits, tours, networking, and everything it takes to spread the word about one's book. I have received many great tips from other writers, that has helped a lot and I've attended many teleseminars. It has all taken me by surprise, but I love every minute of it. I learned from people when doing television spots, they give you great pointers on what television host want from a guest, so I wrote an article about publicity and how to get it, check it out on my website if any is interested. go to www.poisecentral.com. I love to share any information with other writers I have learned. I have a spiritual thriller in progress and a children's book of poetry, I will complete soon, hopefully it will be out this year, but finding the time to finish them with the family, and with the promotion of my first book is difficult sometimes, but I try to work on them as much as possible, after putting my two youngest children to bed. I wish all of you writers great success! Have a great day! I hope if decide to read the article it helps!

Hi Toni

My experience with publishing is much like RuthEvelyn's; self-published my own novel and then ghosted a book which has been published mainstream. In both cases, I have discovered that the author has to do a lot of the publicity and marketing.

I don't have any experience of agents, but I hear most people advise getting one!

All the best,

Imelda

No different than any other product

Publishing a book is no different than any other product invented or manufactured by an entrepreneur.

Too many people forget that you need a plan of action to get attention for your product, which builds interest and then purchase by your target market.

My first book was published in 1985, and reprinted in 2007. My most profitable marketing is through the people who teach my classes using my book. They market and sell my books, and earn a commission. My book is available through other websites who have my affiliate link on their site, and for every book they sell, they get a commission.

These creative ideas, and the people who have made them happen for me, came about after I became very clear on my target market and my goals - and wrote them down. I am a nag about writing down goals and desires and being clear on what need a product (or book) fills.

Each client I work with that takes the time to clarify their marketing focus has found creative and simple solutions to get the results. I have posted some of these in blogs on this network as well as responses to others postings.

There are many messengers, all saying the same message, only from a different perspective. There are many people seeking the messengers words they can resonate with. Keep writing and keep delivering your message.

Namaste'
