I really need your help…
The anxiety in the voice of Susan, the HR Director at one of my consulting clients, was clear.
Susan had recently hired a number of talented young people for her company, but now, this new generation was beginning to have tremendous conflict with the senior members of the team.
As Susan said, “The tension between the generations is escalating. If we don’t do something soon, we’re going to have a crisis on our hands.”
As I gathered Susan’s team together, I decided to try a radical approach. Instead of focusing on the differences between the generations, I divided them into pairs – one senior team member with a newly-hired person – and asked them to identify all the characteristics that both generations wanted to see in the team.
The result was remarkable. Over the next few hours Susan’s team united around four characteristics that literally bridged the generations:
1. Leadership that is authentic
2. Work that matters
3. Companies that stand for something 4. Lives that can be balanced
This month’s newsletter reveals the amazing discovery that united this multi-generational team and enabled them to move forward together.
