The above link is to an article about local currency systems such as Traverse City, MI Bay Bucks and Ithaca, NY  Ithaca Hours.  This idea is catching on as more and more communities are developing thier own systems.  It's perfectly legal and what a wonderful way of keeping a local economy moving and encouraging people to patronize local business.

Read the article and tell me what you think.  Do you think it would work with an internet community as well?

Can't wait to hear your thoughts :)

I love the honesty and simplicity of it ... of course, it would probably get loaded with dishonesty and confusion, but the basic idea
is exactly how things SHOULD be.  Maybe we should start our own country
here at Jason's, and then not worry about the "unaware and
unenlightened" taking away our honest simplicity?

We use the bartering system in our small community of family and friends quite a lot.  It would be great to put structure and procedures together to have this work in a larger community.  As we transition through the balancing that is taking place in our current financial institutions, we may need to create  a means to support and sustain one another.  I agree with Glenn completely, it is quite an interesting idea.  Thank you Christy for sharing this with us.

Hey, Christy!

I find the idea "interesting." I use that term because I cannot think of a term that is either positive or negative. In other words, I stand by Switzerland. The idea seems fun, but unless those using the idea are willing to completely revamp their monetary system and remain a separate entity from all else in regard to the USD, it seems no more likely to be successful than the teacher who rewards her/his student's with fake money and then brings in candy at the end of the week on which it is auctioned. But hey, who am I...? Just some guy who motivates people to enjoy their life. Not a worldly financial expert. But I do know we should spend less than we earn. :) -gbb
