Transformational Breathing
Folks this is the big one....unbelievably awesome results however do the excercises in blogs 1 and 2 first by way of an intro.
If you are interested in making even greater use of your respiratory capacity you may wish to learn a breathing technique such as Transformational Breathing. This is a relatively new breathing technique developed in the USA over the last 20 years by Dr. Judith Kravitz. Judith's ‘inspiration’ (pun intended) came from a personal experience of self-healing. Using principles and skills acquired through her work with the breath, Judith healed a tumor on her throat after which she dedicated herself to promoting the benefits of Transformational Breathing across the globe. It’s an easy-to-learn method which allows us to access 100 % of our respiratory capacity thereby bringing far greater amounts of oxygen and energy into the system. This has numerous beneficial effects on both the physical , mental-emotional and spiritual levels.
Method
Get in a semi-upright postion making sure your back, head and neck are supported. Most people do this on their bed with cushions or pillows behind them. Close your eyes. Place you hand on your abdomen and inhale twice (one after another) through your mouth and then exhale (once ) also through your mouth. So, in effect, you are breathing to the pattern of in-in-out–in–in-out. As you inhale, inflate the tummy using your abdominal muscles (same as with the abdominal breathing we did in the previous blogs) as you exhale let everything relax completely….the exhale is like a quick sigh. Try this for a couple of minutes and notice how you feel as a result. Do not practice this for more than 5 minutes when you first start to use it.
(Note for music lovers – the rythmn is exactly the same as the drum intro to ‘We will Rock You’ by Queen ;0)
Things to watch out for :
1) Make sure your mouth is wide open…and keep it open.
2) Make sure you are comfortable and relaxed…the only part of you that needs to work are your abdominal muscles.
3) Make sure you are releasing the exhale quickly. Do not hang onto it or try to control it …simply ‘ drop’ it. The exhale is where you can completely let go and relax your breath. The ‘work ‘ happens on the inhales.
4) You may experience a little light headedness initially. This is due to the extra oxygen coming into your system. It is part of the process and will pass so keep on breathing.
5) Maintain a constant flow with no pauses. In other words, you are either inhaling or exhaling you do not stop between the two.
6) Focus on your abdomen……..this is your anchor point or foundation on which you can build. Keep your hand on the abdomen as you practice and keep your mind focused there too. The mind may wander to toehr areas of your body however keep bringing it back
7) Do not get distracted. Once you start keep it going. Do not stop or you will ‘unplug’ all the good effects that are happening in your body. Have a clock nearby so you can time yourself.
s The above will give you a good start. If you want to experience tangible benefits do it daily for 3-5 minutes. In the next blog we’ll have a look at next steps.
Who can use it ?
There are no contraindications whatsoever for this modality and consequently it is available and useful for everybody irrespective of age, health or fitness level. However, at the risk of stating the obvious individuals with blockages in their throats which make nose breathing their only option should clearly not be adopting this method.
Transformational Breathing is safe, effective and the results are permanent. The info contained herein will give you a solid foundation on which to build. Kind of like dipping your toe in the water before going for a swim ! If you’ve got any questions whatsoever message me.
In the meantime
Be well
