Jason McElhone grew up in a small town of upstate New York. The oldest of five children, he excelled as a 3-sport athlete while attending Indian River High School before winning an academic scholarship to St. Lawrence University in 1988. Ultimately crowned Senior Captain of his Division III football team, Jason walked away from collegiate sports the proud recipient of the All-East Trophy for Free Safety in 1992.
What took place over the next 14 years was nothing short of sheer debauchery. Fast cars, women and wine would become the cornerstone of this Wall Street Bad Boy's meteoric rise to stock market fame. Knocking down a quarter million dollars a year by the age of 27, Jason pushed the limits of excess often going to great lengths to juggle 4-5 girlfriends at a time.
Alongside his massive ego and 4000 sq foot mansion in South Florida were a fleet of luxury automobiles and 28' speedboat he never even used. Exotic restaurants, imported antique furniture and $700 silk Versace shirts could barely wet his insatiable appetite for more as he became a welcome guest at some of the sunshine state's most opulent destinations.
Even a near heart attack at the age of 30 couldn't slow down this hard charging maverick with nerves of steel. Trading tech stocks with blood pressure pills in hand, Jason would often have pearls of wisdom that netted $25,000 on a single trade. That was until the infamous day in 2005 when lady luck would finally run its course and close up shop for good. Fourteen years of avarice and greed would soon come crashing down on this small town boy with big city dreams.
Trying desperately to make up for a massive shortfall in income, Jason had turned to the highly leveraged world of index options. After setting the derivatives world on fire for more than a year, one catastrophic move turned his entire world upside down. A gigantic order of put options expired worthless in January 2006 as he ignored the warning signs and bet against the prevailing market trends. Suddenly what took 14 years to build was gone in the blink of an eye.
In the span of just a few short months, his majestic house, beautiful fiancé and all the trappings of material success were out the door. By the summer of that same year, most of Jason's clients were long gone and bankruptcy was all but certain. Driven to the brink of his own destruction, Jason finally surrendered all of his holdings in the fall of 2006 and filed Chapter 7 a shell of his former man.
Over the next twelve months he would sink into a bottomless pit of loneliness and despair. Forced to seek work at a local temp agency, this former college educated high roller would find himself driving a forklift for $10/hr and eating 99cent pasta for dinner just to survive. Despite having a roof over his head, Jason would often cry himself to sleep wondering how in the world he was ever going to get out of this mess.
Until one faithful summer's day when walking his dog Jason had an epiphany. Amber, his now 8 yr old chow looked him square in the eye and said, "You're going to start a social network that takes a more spiritual approach to success. A network that will encourage others to work together in the spirit of cooperation as they share their magic with the world. A network that will be called JasonsNetwork.com."
Dead broke with nowhere else to turn, Jason followed his heart in a brand new direction. With Amber by his side, he would endure countless hours in front of the computer. Night after night, sending out personalized invitations often to the point of not being able feel his right arm for weeks at a time. Nearly 75,000 emails and 2 years later, JasonsNetwork.com is now among the "Top 1% of Websites" based on site traffic. With over 100,000 visitors per month and counting, its quality of active membership is second to none.
Commenting on this extraordinary journey of one man's quest out of the darkness and into the light Jason surmises, "What you are witnessing here is nothing short of a miracle. A former egomaniacal stockbroker from a small town in upstate New York who makes millions of dollars on Wall Street only to lose it all before discovering his true calling along the way. I don't know who's going to write that script, but there's got to be a movie in there somewhere."
Now a successful entrepreneur by day and social networking pioneer by night, Jason is just a few short months away from his 40th birthday. With the tilt of a smile he says, "I'm forever grateful to stand before you in awe of the unfathomable beauty put forth by some of the people who have helped make this dream come true. While our journey is far from over, these extraordinary spiritual beings have gathered upon this sacred ground in the name of bringing the world together as One."
Where this network goes from here is anybody's guess. Will it blow up overnight when some relatively unknown media outlet tries to make a name for itself or will it be a slow evolutionary grind that spans the course of the next decade and beyond. While the ultimate outcome of this social networking saga is far from certain, something tells us that you don't want to bet against this small town boy with big city dreams.
